In the research department we work to identify the best funds for inclusion in the Chelsea EasyISAs, Chelsea Core Selection and Selection. However, we understand that it is just as important for you to know how we rate the funds that you currently hold and so have produced Fund Review.
OUR RESEARCH PROCESS
We conduct extensive fund research, which includes analysing performance statistics and risk metrics, as well as utilising external independent research. As a leading broker, we have excellent access to fund managers and see over 400 each year. Conducting one-to-one fund manager interviews, we grill them on their investment process and style, assessing their capability to outperform in different environments. Importantly, we give funds a Chelsea Risk Rating (where 1 is low and 10 is high) to enable you to gauge the level of risk within your portfolio. Further details can be found in the following Fund Review Glossary.
Our Buy, Hold and Switch ratings are simply our generic view on a fund and not personal advice to you. Please note that these views do not constitute any comment on asset allocation.
We hope that you find this Fund Review helpful and that it gives you the knowledge and guidance to assist you in managing your portfolio.
FUND REVIEW GLOSSARY
S&P Capital IQ and Morningstar OBSR Fund Ratings
These ratings give an indication of the fund's stability and performance. S&P Capital IQ now rate funds either Platinum, Gold or Silver and Morningstar OBSR rate funds either Gold, Silver or Bronze. All such ratings indicate confidence in the manager and the way in which the fund is run. However, please note that many funds are unrated for various reasons, and the absence of a rating should not be taken as an adverse comment.
The Chelsea Risk Rating
The Chelsea Risk Rating denotes a fund's risk profile, where 1 is the least risky and 10 has the highest risk. It reflects the fund's volatility within the sector, the sector volatility relative to other sectors, the volatility of the asset class or region in which the fund invests, the number of underlying holdings, the liquidity of those holdings, the risk controls imposed by the manager and the currency in which the fund is denominated. Please note even low-risk rated funds carry some degree of risk.
Bonds are frequently referred to as Investment Grade or Non-Investment Grade.
INVESTMENT GRADE - Bonds ranging in credit rating from AAA (the highest) to BBB. The higher the rating, the greater the capacity to maintain principal value and limit exposure to loss.
NON-INVESTMENT GRADE - Also known as junk or high yield bonds, these bonds are rated below BBB. Due to their degree of default risk, the bonds tend to offer a higher rate of interest.
Please note: we have no knowledge of your personal and financial circumstances and cannot comment on whether the types of investment you hold are suitable for you. The views expressed are Chelsea's views of the most-widely held investment funds within the Chelsea FundStore, powered by Cofunds, and are not to be construed as individual financial advice. These views were correct at time of going to print and we cannot be held responsible for subsequent changes.
BUY - This indicates a generic, not personal, buy recommendation for the fund. Chelsea believes the fund could perform above the sector average and that the fund has been, and will continue to be, managed well by the current fund manager. A buy recommendation is not to be considered as advice on which sector to invest in, nor an indication that funds in that sector are currently performing well.
HOLD - This indicates a generic, not personal, hold recommendation for the fund. Chelsea believes that the fund will continue to perform well under the same management or has recently had a change of fund manager and is under review. If the fund has not been performing well recently, Chelsea believes the current fund manager will be able to improve the fund's performance in the coming months.
SWITCH - This indicates a generic, not personal, switch recommendation for the fund. Chelsea believes that the fund will not perform well in the future and that other funds in its sector will perform better. This could be because of consistently poor past performance or because there has been a recent change of fund manager. For a list of alternative funds, please refer to the Chelsea Core Selection or Selection in our Viewpoint magazine.
